Transformer Replacement & Power Restoration

Emergency removal of a failed transformer, new unit installed, tested, and returned to service.

Project Overview

A primary distribution transformer in service had failed and caused a loss of power to a critical area of the facility. Our team was brought in to safely de-energize, remove, and replace the damaged unit with a new transformer, then reconnect, terminate, test, and restore service with minimal downtime.

The job involved high-energy equipment, tight clearances, and coordination with site operations to keep people safe while getting the system back online quickly and to code.

Scope of Work

  • Lockout / Tagout & De-Energization: Isolated the affected feeder and verified zero energy before any work began.
  • Removal of Failed Transformer: Disconnected primary and secondary conductors, lifted out the damaged unit, and prepared it for disposal per environmental rules.
  • New Transformer Install: Set and secured the new transformer in position, aligned to mounting and clearance requirements.
  • Cable Termination: Re-landed primary and secondary conductors, torqued connections to spec, verified phasing and tap settings.
  • Bonding & Grounding: Confirmed bonding jumpers, grounding electrode connections, and enclosure continuity to OESC/ESA requirements.
  • Testing: Performed insulation resistance (megger), torque log, voltage check, and load balance check prior to energizing.
  • Re-Energization & Verification: Brought the transformer online under supervision, confirmed stable output and absence of abnormal sound/heat.
  • Documentation: Updated single-line, panel schedules, and turnover notes for the owner's records and inspection.
